ITS United Kingdom and Banverket promote rail ITS applications at London 2006

Creation date: 22 August 2006

Following an initial meeting of Swedish and UK ITS professionals with an interest in rail applications at the 2005 World Congress in San Francisco, Banverket and the Passenger Information Interest Group of ITS United Kingdom decided to press forward with efforts to achieve a higher profile for rail applications at the 2006 World Congress.

The two organisations are delighted to report that these efforts have been successful.  Lars Göran Bernland of Banverket is the organiser of two rail-related Special Sessions in the Congress programme: “ITS Supporting Intermodal Freight” (10 October at 9.00) and “ITS Enhancing Railway Performance” (10 October at 11.00), offering a whole morning of rail-related papers to the Congress delegates.

On 13 October, immediately following the Congress, Chris Queree of ITS United Kingdom’s Passenger Information Interest Group, will chair a joint Banverket / ITS United Kingdom Seminar on e-ticketing in rail.  Hosted by Atos Origin, suitably close to London’s Euston Railway Station, the seminar will demonstrate a broad range of European experience in rail with electronic ticketing, covering subjects such as self-print tickets, tickets on mobile and NFC phones, location-based charging, and manifest systems. While rail has not traditionally placed a large role in ITS, electronic ticketing provides a striking example of the benefits of ITS to rail and multi-modal transport. The confirmed speakers to date are…
Mike Cowen, Mastercard
Björn Holmberg, Nordic Travel Card Association
Tony Lacy, Atos Origin
Gregers Mogensen, Danish Railways
Dr Marcus Gemeinder, DB
Jan Christiansen, Norwegian Railways
Frank Socha, Airline Solutions for Distribution
Enrico Trapazzo, Trenitalia
…with speakers from UK Train Operating Companies still to be added.
