Network of National ITS Associations co-hosts Special Session at the 2009 World

Creation date: 12 October 2009

The ERTICO-hosted Network and the International Road Federation (IRF) co-hosted a special session at the 2009 Intelligent Transport Systems Congress in Stockholm in September.

The Session sought to answer two questions:  why are politicians and policy makers still reluctant to invest in ITS, and what needs to be done to support them to develop effective ITS implementation strategies? The vast variety of possible ITS applications might overwhelm them, the financing required may be challenging and the technology label attached to ITS may be a constraint. This might blur their view of the positive contribution ITS can make to major transport policy objectives in road safety, sustainability and keeping traffic moving. The session also looked at the important area of publicising the potential of ITS to make real improvements to the situations of transport operators and those who use our transport networks.

The Session was moderated by Richard Harris of Logica and ITS United Kingdom, and the speakers were Mohammed Serroukh, Director General, ITS Arab, Saudi Arabia;  Nico Anten, CEO, ITS Netherlands, and Chairman, the Network of National ITS Associations,  Prof. Dr. Agnes Lindenbach, Secretary General, ITS Hungary Association;  DI Hans Fiby, Co-ordinator, ITS Vienna Region, Austria; and Caroline Visser, Programme Manager, International Road Federation.
