Special Session chaired by ITS United Kingdom at Geneva Congress

The recent European ITS Congress held in Geneva presented a wide array of sessions including a Special Session organised on behalf of the Network of National ITS Associations. Jennie Martin, Secretary General of ITS United Kingdom both organised and chaired the session on the subject of 'Connecting ITS, Logistics and Public Transport'.
Presentations were given by ITS experts from across Europe including the Netherlands, UK, Germany and Greece.
Nico Anten from ITS Netherlands and Chairman of the Network presented the ‘Benefits of Connecting ITS to Logistics’, highlighting the importance of efficient logistics to the European economy as well as describing how European freight transport policy supports this idea with its concept of co-modality.
Tim Rivett from the South Yorkshire Passenger Executive and James Hewetson from Cloud Amber in the UK gave a presentation on ‘Providing unified information to the traveller’. They spoke about a role based traffic and travel information system they are developing which will enable travellers to access information before and during their journey, allowing them to make informed decisions about how to make the journey most effectively both in terms of time and the environment.
Vassilis Mizaras from Infotrip S.A. in Greece talked about ‘Connecting ITS and Public Transport in Small and Medium Sized Cities’ by comparing how ITS has developed in different sized cites, with the larger cities such as Athens and Thessaloniki having a greater history of ITS development. Smaller cities are also now developing ITS systems and he presented Trikala as an example of best practice.
Dr Carla Eickmann from the German Aerospace Centre and Mr Hans-Peter Wyderka from the Department for Transport, Niedersachsen gave a presentation on ‘Railway Positioning - Potential for Enhanced Traffic Information Systems for Road and Rail’. They gave an overview of the available technologies as well as those in development for safe operations in rail transportation and information services for the traffic of passengers and goods. Finally, they gave a future outlook for further applications using the future European satellite program.
